Announced: February 2, 2007

The Bush Excellence Awards for Faculty will be presented on Wednesday, February 28, 2007 at 11:30 a.m., during the Consuls General luncheon in the Annenberg Presidential Conference Center on the Texas A&M University campus.

Three awards will be presented, one each for outstanding work in international teaching, international research, and international public service. The Texas A&M University Bush Excellence Award for Faculty in International Teaching will be presented to James C. Bradford, professor of history. The award for in International Research will be presented to Roger S. Ulrich, professor of architecture, and the award in Public Service will go to Charles D. Johnson, director of the Public Policy Research Institute.

The Bush Excellence Awards were established through the vision and support of President and Mrs. George H. W. Bush with financial assistance from the George Bush Presidential Library Foundation.

“Texas A&M is very grateful to President and Mrs. Bush for establishing the Bush Excellence Awards for Faculty,” said Executive Vice President and Provost David B. Prior. “Through their generosity as well as that of the Bush Foundation, Texas A&M is able to recognize outstanding faculty members for their achievements in international research, teaching, and public service.”

Three anonymous committees, composed of faculty members, reviewed the nominations and selected the awardees.

James Bradford

The teaching award recognizes a faculty member who has made outstanding contributions to the international education of Texas A&M students, including teaching Texas A&M students outside of the United States and an impressive record of effective teaching. James Bradford has not only taught Aggies in Italy, France, England and Ireland but has taught and lectured in many other venues around the world. He has made special efforts to welcome to this country Aggies of foreign birth and served several years as faculty advisors to Malaysian students.

Roger Ulrich

The research award recognizes a faculty member who has made outstanding contributions to international research and obtained international preeminence through research. Well known throughout the international healthcare community, Roger Ulrich is recognized for his research that has changed the way buildings are designed and healthcare provided. Nominators believe the work of Ulrich has been a factor in raising the international profile of the College of Architecture and attracting the best students and faculty to its programs.

Charles Johnson

The public service award recognizes a faculty member who has made outstanding contributions in public service by demonstrating a sustained, long-term application of disciplinary expertise to the public or non-profit sector in local, statewide, national, or international arenas. Charles Johnson’s successful service-oriented leadership has led the Public Policy Research to great acclaim. The positive impact of his work is experienced throughout Texas at the state and local levels including such model programs as the Center for Community Support dedicated to providing assistance to community and nonprofit groups who frequently find it difficulty to obtain federal grant funding. This Center has brought more than $32 million in federal dollars to the state.

Dr. Bill Perry and Roman Popadiuk, executive director of the Bush Presidential Library Foundation, will present each recipient with a plaque and a check for $2,500 during the luncheon.

This is the sixth year since the inception of the Bush Excellence Awards. The awards are given each spring at the Consuls General luncheon as part of International Week.
