Former Korean Minister to Speak at Texas A&M

The Texas A&M chapter of the Korean/Korean-American Scientists and Engineers Association (KSEA) is presenting a seminar by Dr. Jung Uck Seo '63 on May 22 from 4 to 6 p.m. in the Civil Engineering Building on Ross Street in Room 110. A reception sponsored by International Programs will follow in the lobby reception area of the building.

Seo, the former Minister of Science and Technology of the Republic of Korea (ROK) and current member of the Texas A&M International Board, will speak on the roles of Korean and Korean-American scientists and engineers and their contribution to a global society. The presentation will be delivered in Korean.

The KSEA event planners believe that the students, researchers and scholars attending will greatly benefit from Seo's presentation learning from this distinguished speaker to broaden their perspectives and prepare for life and business in the real world and make their own contribution to a global society.

Currently the Chairman of the Korea Foundation for International Cooperation of Science and Technology and the e-Trade Facilitation, Seo received a bachelor’s degree from Seoul National University in 1957 before coming to Texas A&M University to earn a Masters degree in Engineering in 1963 and a Ph.D. degree in 1969. During his illustrious career he has served as the Director of ROK Air Force Ionospheric Research Laboratory and worked for the Agency for Defense Development, been president of the Korea Institute of Science and Technology, Chairman of the Commission for Radio Communications Development where he developed a digital cellular mobile telephone system and a direct broadcasting satellite system using Koreas' first broadcasting satellite. In 1999 he became President of ChoDang University in Korea.

In 1996, Seo received the Texas A&M University Outstanding International Alumnus Award and was invited to deliver the commencement address to the Texas A&M class of 1999. He has been decorated by the ROK government with the Distinguished Service Award and the Gold Tower Order of Industrial Service Merit, the highest industrial decoration in Korea.
